The Art

I photograph neon. These are translucent prints of my work illuminated by LED lightbox frames. Each one is hand made, customized, signed and numbered. There's nothing quite like it out there in the world. It's as if you are seeing the real neon in person, inside a beautifully customized electric frame.

Exactly that. The photo prints are made from Duratrans translucent film backed by an LED lightbox inside a customized frame. It makes the art glow just as neon glows.

“10” is the atomic number of neon gas. Noir means “night”.

I have had a life-long fascination with lumenescent aesthetics. I have always loved light at night, even when I was very young. I have 30 plus years of media experience as a designer and producer and I learned how to shoot film in film school. I had been wanting to shoot neon for a long time, but during the pandemic I had plenty of time on my hands and was a way to safely leave home. Then the project  took on a wonderful life of its own.

I was preparing to start selling prints of my photos after finding an enthusiastic audience on instagram. I was sitting staring at a neon hot dog neon sign at a restaurant and it was one of those epiphanies we all have. It hit me like lightning and I said out loud: “My photos should light up!”. Part of my career was in designing signage, so I knew how to light them up. And thus the adventure began.

I think LED “neon” is like vegan cheese, or a plastic house plant. Nothing is inherently wrong with either of those things, but come on... most of us want the real thing. I won’t say I never shoot LED, however I avoid it most of the time. Neon has soul. LED is just a power indicator.

We do not use generative AI in our original photos. New technology is supposed to solve problems. Art and creativity are not problems to be solved.

NO! Portland is where my studio is located and has an amazing amount of creative neon. However we offer shots also from Texas, and we plan on expanding to New York City, Chicago and Las Vegas - really anywhere that has memorable neon.

I use a process called “color mapping”. If you look closely there are only about 8 colors in any of my prints. I also shoot in what is known as “RAW” format. It’s a digital format that allows for an incredible amount of detailed editing, plus I shoot at a very high resolution. Try shooting in RAW format and with high contrast. Check out the movie "Moneyball", the baseball game scenes inspired my look. Also, lenses matter much more than your camera does.

Many of my shots use a technique called “Dutch angles”. This style was made famous in the 1960’s campy “Batman” television series. A slight tilt in most photographs will make photos feel more dramatic. A Dutch angle can make even mundane things more look more dynamic. Give it a try!

We warranty the electronics and the integrity of the art piece for a period of 1 year from the date of purchase. By "integrity", we mean that we warranty the customization of the backing and framing materials. These are art pieces and should be handled with care and placed in normal, indoor environments. Not for use outdoors or in exceedingly humid environments. It's recommended to keep your print out of direct sunlight.

We use the highest quality duratrans backlit film in the industry. Each print is produced on 10mm archival-grade backlit film, the same material used in museum lightboxes and high-end retail displays. Lit from behind by low-heat LEDs rather than old-style fluorescent tubes, the image is exposed to far less UV than traditional lightbox signage — which means the color stays rich and the blacks stay deep for years of everyday display.

Keep it out of direct sunlight, wipe the surface with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and it'll hold its glow for a long time to come!
